“Today was the first ever 218-km mega relay run to celebrate NTU’s 55th anniversary and raise funds for needy students.
As part of Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) 55th anniversary celebrations, its alumni, students, staff and supporters will be coming together to take part in a unique 218-km Run Round Singapore relay run, which will be held from 27 to 28 March 2010.
The total distance of the relay run is equivalent to five marathons combined. This will be the first ever 218-km relay run to be held in Singapore. The record of ‘Highest Participation Relay Run Round Singapore’ (168km, 50 relay stations, 3,593 participants) was set five years ago when NTU celebrated its 50th anniversary.
As part of its 55th anniversary celebrations, the NTU community is coming together and rallying supporters and friends to break this record for a worthy cause. Nine core runners – representing NTU alumni, students and staff – will attempt to go the entire distance and to set new records for the Singapore Book of Records by completing the 218-km run in under 36 hours.
To encourage more participants from various constituencies throughout Singapore to take part in the non-competitive mass relay run, there will be a total of 68 relay stations, each averaging 3km, along the 218-km route. About 10,000 participants are expected to take part in Run Round Singapore.
Besides promoting healthy lifestyle and celebrating the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, Run Round Singapore also aims to raise funds for the NTU Endowment Fund, which supports financially needy students of NTU.”
