Messy Affair…

Today is carrots day! Yip, that’s right - I thot it would be time to give my littl’ cherub some carrots!

I have been progressing slowly with the rice cereal every morning… However, I don’t think she really likes it but she’s gonna have to like it, cos I have no intention of stopping it!! *Grin*

For lunch, I gave her carrot puree… She took to it MUCH better than her rice cereal! Her mouth opened and she swallowed the orange stuff… Maybe she liked the colour?!??! I mean, red is her favourtie colour and orange is close enuf to the red!? Anyways, I’m glad she enjoyed it…. Problem is that it’s super duper wuper messy! And with the carrots - she loves talking with her mouth full! So she spits/sprays this orange stuff everywhere - floor, on my glasses, even up her nose!, on her clothes and her bib is full of it!!! I so didn’t realise that it was so hard to get off the bib - that’s if you are me and don’t rinse the bibs straight away!! With rice cereal, there was no talking, hence, no spitting/spraying of the food - just in case when her mouth opens, mummy slying pushes the stuff in!! ;)

I love carrots!

New Vocab! Aaaa-Uuummmmm!

My Chloe has recently been experimenting with new sounds…

First, it was the horrendous “how loud can you scream” noise, then it was the woolf howl sound “Aaaaa-wooooooooooooo”….. Now it’s the “Aaaaaaaa-ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm”

This sound is quite cute in a way - as she keeps using the same sound but in different tones - depending on what she wants!

Recently Chloe has been showing signs that she is ready for solids… So, 3 days ago we thot it would be a good day to start her on her first rice cereal!

I was so excited! Hupps and I woke up early, prepared the cereal… Sat Chloe on her spongey chair, got the bib ready and we were ready to start….

First Rice Cereal...

We put some rice cereal on her spoon and aimed for her mouth… Her mouth opened slightly - so this was a good start/reaction! The spoon entered her mouth and as the tongue touched the spoon/rice cereal, her mouth shut! She pushed the spoon back out by using her tongue… The rice cereal that had entered her mouth, then slowly seeped out the corners of her mouth! Ummm… tried a second time and she wasn’t really having it! Everytime any rice cereal went into her mouth she would let it seep out the corners of her mouth and give a scrunched up face, as if to say “What are you giving me - this is gross!”

In protest to the rice cereal, her hands would block the spoon, hands would try and grab the bowl, she would shake/move her head to avoid the food, block the entry of food via tongue/mouth or spit it/let it seep out of her mouth… What a mess! It was either dribble or rice cereal! ummmm!

Day 2 was even worse… she wouldn’t have it at all!…. She would just block the entry of the spoon by using her tongue! However, on a good note there was less mess though! ;)

Day 3 -Today was slightly better! Although there was still the hurdle of the tongue, the cringing, the regurgitation, the crazy hand movements, the seeping of the food out of the corners of the mouth - some of the rice cereal managed to get into and stay in the mouth!! Which I assume then trickled down her throat or either she swallowed it (which I doubt!!) Anyhows - Yay, even if it was only a few drops of rice cereal!!

Today I didn’t mind the mess that occured on the floor, on her face, on her clothes and her chair/table!

Snakey Snakey!

I have been wanting to do something arty-farty recently…. So bought myself a few bits and bobs….

Today, I had time alone with Chloe, as Mama was playing mah jong and Hupps in reservist… So got/found myself some foot socks, some ‘eyes’, red string, decorations, needle and thread and voila - the project begins!

Welcome to Mr & Mrs Snakey Snakey

So how do you like Mr and Mrs Snakey Snakey?!!??! Hehe - Chloe seemed to be fascinated by them!

I don’t really know why I selected this CD from the cabinet, nor do I know what the words actually mean - But growing up, we all knew who Teresa Teng was… In my younger years, Teresa Teng songs, ABBA, Beatles etc were played around the house and I loved it!

Well, I decided to play Teresa Teng and lo and behold my lill’ Chloe starting babbling!!! She liked it!!! In particular, she babbled and smiled more to my fave….
I only care about you
;)

*Played ABBA also - but she cried! Umm!!!*

“Chloe, I Said No TV!”

Saturday, July 18, 2009 by Daisy in General Blog Posts

To be honest, I don’t watch much TV… Never did when I was younger, nor do I now… When we were younger, my sisters and I used to play in the toy room or outdoors… There wasn’t much time for TV, and I suppose in those times, TV wasn’t that popular - and now, looking back, I didn’t really miss it - and I’m real glad…

Chloe is 5.5 months and already, when I walk past the TV whilst holding her in my arms - her head will quickly turn towards the tv… There were a few times where I tried to breastfeed her whilst watching the tv and she wouldn’t feed! She kept looking towards the tv! I had to goto a quiet room or switch the tv off, in order for her to concentrate! How crazy is that!?!??!

The tv here is often on and is often very loud - when Chloe is awake and asleep!… And although I do not like it - there is not much I can really do, as (i) it’s not our own house, (ii) it’s Mama’s past-time… The only thing I can do is get her away from it as much as possible…. I mean, the benefits of parent-child interactions are already proven…talking, singing, reading, listening to music, playing, going for walks are far more important to a child’s development (mentally, socially and physcially) than any TV programme…

Although I try hard to get her to stay away from the tv when it is on… I wonder how bad it is for her to be able to hear the tv in the background - almost constantly?!?!? I mean, sometimes when the door is closed and she is sleeping in the cot - even I can hear the tv from the room!

Switch it off!

Recently, I had noticed that she is more calmer when the tv had not been on at all that day - I mean, she spoke (made baby noises) more, had her naps at the correct times, was more interactive and didn’t fuss or cry at bedtime… Maybe it’s just me.. So I decided to research it! This is what I found…

Q1) What does television do to young minds?

•Shown to impair brain development.
•When the tv is on, even if a baby is not watching it, it distracts him/her from allowing him/her to complete his/her own thoughts and problem-solving quietly.
•Takes away precious time that babies can interact with parents and their environment.
•Several links have been found between tv watching and subsequent attention problems in children.
•Children under 2 rarely understand the content of a tv program, and often confuse pretend with reality.
•Tv watching can be addictive – the more they see, the more they want to see! Daily viewing can easily become a habit.
•Children who watch tv in their early years have been shown to be at higher risk for obesity, poor social development, and aggressive behavior.

Q2) Does the American Academy of Paediatrics recommend against TV viewing for children under the age of 2?

“Yes.
In 1999 the American Academy of Paediatrics issued a policy statement about media and children. In it, the organization discussed the benefits media education can have as well as the health risks TV poses to children, especially those under the age of two. Specifically, the AAP said:

‘Paediatricians should urge parents to avoid television viewing for children under the age of 2 years. Although certain television programs may be promoted to this age group, research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant caregivers (eg, child care providers) for healthy brain growth and the development of appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Therefore, exposing such young children to television programs should be discouraged.’

Q3) Does having a TV on in the background - either in another room or in the same room where a child is playing - matter?

“Yes, background TV can be a disruptive influence.
According to a recent study conducted by a group of scholars and published in American Behavioral Scientist, the television is on approximately six hours a day on average in American homes. Yet little is known about the impact of growing up in the near constant presence of television. They studied the prevalence and developmental impact of “heavy-television” households on very young children from birth to age 6 drawn from a nationally representative sample. Thirty-five percent of the children lived in a home where the television was on “always” or “most of the time,” even if no one was watching. Regardless of their age, children from heavy-television households watched more television and read less than other children. Furthermore, children exposed to constant television were less likely to be able to read than other children. Also, other research has shown that one-, two-, and three-year-olds’ play and attention spans are shorter in length in the presence of background television, and parent-child interactions are also less frequent in the presence of background television

Q4) Can TV help a young child’s language development?

“Yes and no, depending on what the child is watching.
Studies have found that children at 30 months of age who watched certain programs (one study focused on Dora the Explorer, Blues Clues, Clifford and Dragon Tales) resulted in greater vocabularies and higher expressive language whereas overall television viewing (including adult programs) has been associated with reduced vocabulary.”

********My mind made up!**********
No tv for Chloe at the moment - esp. when she’s under 2 years old…. Although tv can help her in the future - much older than 2! (certain kiddies programmes and documentaries) - too much can be a bad thing… so, it has to be a good mix I suppose!

Anyways, the less she watches, the less she’ll be obsessed with a kiddies programme, the less she’ll be obsessed with buying the DVD, the matching bedsheet, comforter, doll and all the toys and gadgets with their favorite characters on them! Phew - money saving tip! ;)

One, Two, Three, Four, Five….

Thursday, July 16, 2009 by Daisy in General Blog Posts

It’s been a few weeks now and each time I run my fingers thru my hair - I end up with lots of strands of my hair entwined in my fingers… I totally know that it’s a normal process after pregnancy. Yip, I know we’re meant to lose the hair that wouldn’t have been there in the first place! Yip, I know it’s ok…

But It’s soooooooooo scary… I wake up and see my pillow with strands of hair… I sweep the floor but within half an hour - there’s more hair… When I shower, the plug/drain is completely filled with hair… I see Chloe put her hands in her mouth - and she’s got strands of my hair!!! I blowdry or just shake my head and the floor fills with my hair! I just see my hair everywhere! So randomly everywhere! On the sofa, in Chloe’s cot, on Chloe’s clothes, on my shoulder, in the playpen, you name it, it’s probably there…! There’s just no getting away!

There was one time, I got so paranoid that I started counting the number of strands during my shower session!! 1,2,3,4…. I got to 250 and I thought - “Oh man - this is ridiculos - I gotta stop, I’m gonna stress myself out!”…. So, there and then, without finishing the count - I stopped! Now, each time I see the hair in the plug - I quick time pick it up and flush it away.. Each time I see hair on the floor, I sweep it up… Each time I feel my ‘loose hair’ “itch” me, I pick it up from where it’s causing the itch and throw it in the bin…

My frens tell me this is normal… Just hope this loss of hair business doesn’t last for too long cos I’m not sure how long I can withhold counting the strands!

Huppy Absence

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 by Daisy in General Blog Posts

As of tomorrow morning 6am, Huppy will be leaving home for his National Service… He has missed 4 years already cos of being in UK.. So now, it’s catch-up time! The reservist will end 1 minute before his birthday (11:59pm 1st Aug)!! So until then, Huppy will generally be absent from home… Absent from my company, absent from Chloe!

Because he is married, thankfully, he will be allowed to go home to sleep everyday… The reservist day will usually end about 7-7:30pm and he will have to report back, in camp, the following morning at, I think 7am… So that will give him a few hours to spend with us (Note: minus the transportation time to and from the camp, rest time - assuming he rests at the same time as if he wasn’t in reservist - but doubt it - he’ll prob be knackered and sleep earlier!)

Well, hopefully he will have no night training - cos if he does, then he won’t be able to come home… Also, generally, they should be able to come home on the weekends - but if there is a mission - then he won’t be able to come home!! I heard from his frens that they had a VERY HARD time! Ummmmm….

Anyways - keep you all updated with mine and Huppy’s happenings - if there is anything to tell! Nite nite.

Just Some Updates…

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 by Daisy in Baby, Daisy's Thoughts, General Blog Posts

Wow…. Been super duper busy recently (so haven’t really posted much words!) - Don’t even know where to start!!! So excuse me if this posting is a bit hay-wire and random!

1) Met some and will be meeting some more new mother and babies… A few months back I decided that I need to know more mothers and babies… So that my social life can get back on track! I mean, surely life must continue - even if I’m bogged down by dirty nappies, constant breast feeding, lack of sleep!! It all started when I randomly landed on an expat mother and baby forum…. These were all new mothers who wanted to meet other mums and their little ones - they all seemed as tho they were in the same boat as me… However, it didn’t appear that anything was happening - all saying that someone should organise a meet-up… So, there and then, I organised a meet-up at a central location! The meet-up turned out really well and we chilled and chatted over coffee… Since that meeting, there have been numerous meet-ups… I can happily say that there are some mothers whom I got on with and loved their company - Im sure we will continue to keep in contact and become firm frens… *One lady thot I was the organiser!?!??! Ummm…. Bless her, but nope!!*

2) A few months back I also joined the Breastfeeding Mothers’ Support Group - so I have been along to one of the member’s home. It was a breastfeeding support group where other like-minded mothers and their babies/toddlers get to know each other and yet again, chill out and chat! Got other events coming up too - so busy busy busy!

3) Yet again, a few months back (yeah - so many ‘few months back’ eh!!! - Reason was becos I came back to Singa a few months back! Hence, that’s why everything happened ‘a few months back’ - if you get my drift!!) - Well, continuing with the third point - DnA joined the local Resident’s Committee… Always wanted to volunteer my time - but only recently have I been able to get some sort of routine going with Chloe… A few days ago, we were accepted to become volunteers (Ummm - bit random that you need to be ‘accepted’ to become volunteers - thot they would need all the help they could get!?!??!) - But anyways, DnA will be more active with our local community soon! Ofcos, Chloe will be my sidekick cos we’re joined to the hip!!!

4) Been eating out a bit too much and trying new food places… Esp. yummy and worth mentioning was the Imperial Treasure Teochew Cuisine Restaurant @ Ngee Ann City… You so gotta try the fish maw/double boiled chicken soup (Not too sure what the exact name is though!) - It’s so fab!!! But note - it was SOOOOOO busy - so make sure you make a reservation! In addition, been having a lot of my fave Japanese recently too! I so lurve soft shell crab and salmon sashimi! Gotta calm down for awhile cos all this seafood is so not good for my eczema!

5) Baby happenings - Chloe is constantly keeping me active and on my toes… I recently bought her first chair!!! (Saw something similiar on a fren’s blog and thot ‘what a fab idea’!)… Chloe still can’t sit up on her own, but with this chair - it gives a new perspective to her ‘boring lie-down/on her front life’! It’s called a ‘Prince Lionheart BebePod Plus Watermelon’!! It’s great for sitting, eating & playing - the comfy spongy-type seat is ergonomically designed to promote proper posture while helping Chloe learn to sit! It has a removable pommel, adjustable tray, 2 reusable placemats (watermelon pic - hence the name!) and an attachable toy… Happy Days!!!

Chloe's first chair

In addition, Chloe I think is starting to teeth! Ran my fingers on her gums and noticed a small bump - had a look and saw a white spot-type of thing on her lower gum… Not entirely sure if she is teething - but if she is - that would explain the irritability, drooling and biting everything! Oh yeah - Chloe can now flip on her front and back - so there’s no more suffocation bedtime situations!!! I thot this would give me more night time sleep - but I was soooooo wrong! For some reason, she now generally drinks less in the day - as she has the habit of wanting to play and look around - so she can never seem to stay still enuf or have the patience to have more than 5 mins milk. When Huppy comes in to the room and starts speaking - that’s it - she’s had enuf (even if it is only 3 mins!) and then she just wants to play!! Now - I’ve banned Huppy or mama from making Chloe aware that they are there if I am breastfeeding! To make things worse - the days and nights seems to have switched! Whereas she used to drink more in the day and sleeps longer in the night, she now wakes up more in the night to drink!!! Oh mannnnnnnn! Oh well, what to do eh!

6) DnA happenings… As well as all the above - I spend the rest of my time with Hupps and Mama…

I think that’s a good update and I’ve written enuf - so write laters!

My Little Fairy!

Thursday, July 9, 2009 by Daisy in General Blog Posts

Chloe wore this dress today with a matching headband… She just reminded me of a little fairy - so out came the camera!!

My Little Fairy!

P.s. The wand is fake - a bit of touch-up to the pic, to help you see what I saw in my head!! ;)
