It’s Show Time!

Friday, January 30, 2009 by Daisy in Baby, Daisy's Thoughts, General Blog Posts

I’m not talking about a theatre show nor a TV show – the ‘show’ I’m talking about is the mucous blood show experienced in pregnancy!!! This morning, I had a ‘show’!!!

So what is this ‘Show’?
This is a red/brown tinged thickish mucous discharge that comes out of the vagina due to the cervix dilating – (this show has a little blood mixed with the mucous). This is the plug of mucous in the cervix – which has helped to seal the womb during pregnancy.

Some women will lose their mucous plug or part of their mucous plug weeks before they go into labour. Losing your mucous plug can sometimes mean going into labour within the next several hours (Phew – thank goodness Hupps arrived home yesterday!!!), or within the next several days or within the next several weeks!!! Well, I’m only 37 weeks! So, there’s no indication really!!! Ummm….

However, losing your mucous plug is a good sign that labor is on its way!

Haven’t really done much since this morning except, do a little shopping at the local supermarket and just go through my hospital bag – to make sure things were in order!!!

Anyways, there’s no rush until I go into “real labour” with symptoms such as:

This includes:
1) Regular contractions – Haven’t had these yet (And I don’t know if I’ve had Braxton Hicks – which are false contractions)!
2) Back ache – like those experienced during your menses… I did have this last night – worse than normal!
3) Waters breaking – Nope, not had these yet!

Well, will keep you all posted!!! ;)

Yay – Huppy Is Arriving Early!!!

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Daisy in Baby, Daisy's Thoughts, General Blog Posts

I had a phonecall late last night (whilst I was sound asleep) with some super-duper good news… So good, I couldn’t get to sleep until a few hours later!!!

Huppy and Mama have changed their airline tickets to arrive tomorrow!! They were scheduled to arrive in UK at the end of the week… However, due to my “symptoms” and me not knowing whether I’ll be in labour soon etc – Hupps didn’t want to risk it – so he’s currently rushing all his work stuff and will be flying off tonight to arrive tomorrow – Yay!!!

Well, I’m currently 37 weeks today – so that’s 3 weeks to go…. but who knows eh!?!??! At least now that I know Hupps is gonna be here soon – I don’t have to worry about “popping” early!!! Actually, I would like Chloe to arrive early – cos she getting a little cramped in my tummy and it’s starting to feel uncomfortable!

Anyways – looking forward to Hupps and Mama’s arrival and then Chloe!!! :)

I saw this video from a good friend’s blog. I think this video should be watched and digested by people who are still looking for what they want in life. Very inspiring. Btw the speaker is better known as Apple’s CEO and founder, Steve Jobs. Enjoy.

My Own SFR – Also Known As Special Fried Rice

Saturday, January 24, 2009 by Daisy in Daisy's Thoughts, General Blog Posts, Really Nice Food

With CNY around the corner, my family members here – namely Mum and Gavin are busy tidying and shifting stuff around the house and garage…

So I thought I’d do my part by washing the dishes and cooking lunch!! Yip, you heard me right – cook!!

Actually, so that you are also aware, I cooked from scratch last night for me and Gav! Nothing spectacular – just did a sort of wok stir-fry dish which included leeks, carrots, potatoes, onions and frankfurters… added a bit of vegetarian oyster sauce and served it over boiled rice! Voila!!!! I thought it tasted ok, although it did look a bit mushy!!! :)

Well, after rummaging through what ingredients we had at home – I thought it would be good to cook special fried rice… Well, my own verison of SFR!

Ingredients included:
Peas
Sweetcorn
Diced onions
Diced carrots
Chopped pork frankfurters
Chopped spring onions
Diced garlic
Freshly boiled rice

Basically, to simplify the procedure – I wok fried the garlic and onions until golden brown, then chucked in all the ingredients except the rice until nearly cooked. After that, mixed in the boiled rice, added salt and soya sauce. In addition, the last step was to add some salad cream!! Yip, you heard me, salad cream! Believe it or not – it tastes quite good… I suppose, cos no egg was used?!?! Oh well, at least Gav loves it!!!

I must admit, the major problem I did and do have is estimating the portions!!! I was supposed to be cooking for three… But, my final portions could feed much more than that! It completely filled the whole wok!! Well, atleast that’s lunch and dinner sorted!!! ;)

If I Were The Finance Minister, What Would I Do

Saturday, January 24, 2009 by Allan in Allan's Thoughts, General Blog Posts

Yesterday was Singapore’s budget day, and this year it was probably more important to watch it live on TV (I think the tv ratings for this year’s budget day is probably higher than The Little Nonya’s finale). Anyways, the finance minister and various prominent figures of the society was discussing about the current situation that Singapore is facing, what the government has come up with to deal with the worst ever recession in Singapore’s history etc..

And quite frankly, their solutions might not make lots of people very happy and satisfied, but from a bigger vantage point, you can actually see why they are focusing on helping the businesses and the very low income households. So I am surprised to see that one of the Singapore gossip newspapers is actually trying to rub salt on the general population’s wound and said: What is going to happen to the commoners?

I mean, seriously, the govt is going to give income tax rebates, Workfare Income Supplement, GST Rebates and etc, so the commoners are benefitting too. Anyways to understand why the govt chose to do what they did, go to www.singaporebudget.gov.sg and read about it.

And I thought this game is rather cool and to give commoners a chance to dictate what they so often talked about if they are the government what they would do, here is a chance to talk the talk and walk the walk… Have a go government-complainers!!

What if I were the finance minister game

Mama asked me some questions just now…

“These inventors from the past were so smart… how come they are so smart?”
My reply: “Because they were probably rich people who has the choice to study what they want, and have the time to research on it because they do not have to worry about money and working for money.”

Then the question of the century came out of her mouth.

“Errr.. How come they are so rich leh?”

What do you think my answer was?

“Because of maybe a few reasons, they could be part of the royal family, collect taxes and rent from lands. It could be in the older days, if you are the 1st to discover something, like wine and setup a vineyard, you actually started a business and because it is like a necessity, everyone will buy it sometime, you will be rich, and the wealth stays within the family and is constantly passed down, hence the descendents are naturally rich since they were born. (did not tell her this part though as I do not know how to say in mandarin) It could also because they were the 1st to do something different, like Henry Ford, John Davison Rockefeller and Sam Walton.”

GBPFor the past 4 weeks the British Pounds has gone through a roller coaster ride and in the past 2 days it has fallen to a 24 year record low against the USD. It has also fallen so much that it is 1st time in the history that it has created an all time low against the Japanese yen. (click on image to see) Euro $ is becoming on par to GBP soon, at 0.941 at this moment.

Not only that, even Singapore is hit by this crisis, although not as bad, the Prime Minister did pre-warn the country last nite on the news, “this could be the worse economic crisis Singapore has ever seen…” Well of course, since Great Depression did not affect Singapore that much.

During times like these, forex traders will enjoy the rewards if you can anticipate such a volatile movement. I do know of such a system forex trader who has got quite a foresight, and he shared with me quite a bit during this past few months.

He told me about his thoughts about the market and based on his trading experience, he could link everything that is happening and make senses to me. He shared with me indepth of the inside of the trading world and answered all my questions to his best knowledge. He is truly someone whom I will look for advice when it comes to trading.

It seems like to me that everything I have read from books and told by a few wise men, everything that is text book context is happening in today’s world, I never thought I would live to see it, but its happening.

Ok before I continue, please do not panic. Its not the end of the world. It will not be as bad as the Great Depression. So put your faith with what you are doing and just keep doing what you are good at, you will be fine. Esp for people who does not mind downgrading their situation and continue to work hard.

Ok, are you ready for this? This is what I think is happening. Purely my personal opinion, for I am not a prophet.

As the debts (mortgages, loans, credit cards) accumulate, payments get defaulted. Billions of dollars of paper assets are lost. Overpriced properties were overpriced because of the optimism from the boom has caused the properties to become negative equities. Consumers who owe the banks cannot repay, the banks declare heavy losses, shareholders lose faith and hard sell shares of banks, no more incoming funds + lack of repayments = not enough cash to give to panic depositors who wants their hard earned money out of the banks. Banks ask for help from government to stay afloat. Govt have to help to make sure all the hard earned money of the civilians are protected.

Consumption is reduced because no one is spending like before, retailers close down stores after stores, so does the manufacturers. Jobs are lost. Consumption is further reduced. High unemployment rates will further put the economy to a lower level.

So far it has been a negative note and many of you are probably worried. So here comes the positive side…

As long as the policy makers are making the right decisions after learning their lessons from the Great Depression, they should help (big) companies to change or diversify their operations to suit the economy and continue to employ workers, and consumers should continue to spend, so that the economy can grow back. Of course based on the economics that I have learnt, as long as there are consumption, there will be upwards growth (in general) and also ideally, market efficiency.

Anyways, this blog post is not to scare people or panic anyone. This is just a reminder to do your part as a consumer and citizen to contribute to the revival of the economy, afterall the economy is like these all because of the consumers – us!

Please do not be offended.

My gentle reminder to my dear readers and friends would be:
i) stay away from equities unless you know what you are doing, for at least 6 months to a year.
ii) if you have a job, be glad that you have a job, don’t complain too much about your job.
iii) if you feel shaky or uncertain about your job, start to look for additional sources of income.
iv) if you just lost your job, please don’t be too unrealistic when you are looking for the next one, have to be patient to get the ideal job that you want, meantime settle for something to put food on the table.

Today, Mum and I decided it’s time to decorate! Gone are Christmas’ decorations… cos It’s Chinese New Year’s time!!!

Masses of red and gold filled the house!! Looks a bit like a shop display – but hey, once a year it happens – so why not fill the house eh!??!?! Anyways, you can never have too much gold!!! ;)
(If only the gold nuggets were real!!)

Here are some snap shots:

Here, I wish you all a prosperous 2009, with lots of wealth, health and love.

Why Would You Wanna Call Your Child That?!?!?

Monday, January 19, 2009 by Daisy in Daisy's Thoughts, General Blog Posts

Today, I was trying to find an artist’s name with my sis… She sang the theme song to a Taiwan drama series ‘I do’…. When my sis told me the name, I was like, “Why would you wanna call your child that?!?!?”

Can you guess what it is? Well, anyways, let me get you out of your misery – and tell you the answer… It’s “Fish”!!! *Side note: the name is bizarre, but the song is good!!!*

Hello! Fish?!?!?! How do you even get to that as a name for your beloved child?!?!? Each to their own, I suppose!! I somehow wonder whether the mother/father were eating lots of fish during the pregnancy, or whether they love fish so much that it’s overshadowed their choice!!! Maybe their next child will be called Chips?!?!?

In my lifetime, I’ve heard of many names which make me laugh…. Some I can accept, but others…. Ummm!!! It just makes me wonder, how they get to these names and whether the parents risk doing their child serious psychological damage!

Examples of calling your child include:
Chilli – the parents were obviously hoping for a ‘hot’ child!!!
Fanny – not gonna go there!
Apple – red or green?!?!
Rain – I prefer Sunshine!
Gummy Bear and Coca Cola – were both rejected by Queensland authorities in 2008! I wonder why!
Stallion – Oh my!! A wanna-be?!?!?
Number 16 Bus Shelter – Ummm, I wonder if they conceived there?!?! Then why would you call your child this?!?!
Violence – where’s the logic in this name?!

You never know, instead of calling our daughter-to-be Chloe, I could start the trend by calling it Monday, then the next child Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and so on…!!! 7 children!! Maybe not!! ;)

Dinner @ Seren

This evening, I met up with a few frens for dinner at a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant called Seren, Canton. However, just as we were about to leave for the dinner date, the weather was blowing a gale and pouring it down… How typical eh! Was dreading stepping out of the door!

We’ve never been to this place, but Pri had passed it a few times – so that’s why we thought we would give it a try… Arrived – and it was nice – small and cosy but not too claustrophobic… Dim lighting but not too dark…

Food was fab and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening – eating and chatting away… I’ve missed these candle-lit dinner dates at different places… I mean, with me being in Singapore – the usual eating/meeting places are hawker centres/food courts, busy restaurants…. It’s fine – but sometimes, it’s nice to have a meal at a smallish, local, quietish but nice restaurant with perfect ambience and just chill out over wine and nice food (not that I drink!). I love trying different types of food.. and this evening was really nice… It was busy at the restaurant but not rowdy!

I’ve always wanted to find a restaurant/place that Allan and I could call “our special dining place” and go there for special occasions…. A place where we both heart the food, sit at the same table, with perfect ambience and go on a regular basis without getting bored!! A place where you’re known as a regular and where you get to know the owner and staff well… I hope to find this place, but unfortunately, we haven’t found it yet! So until then, it’s keep trying different restaurants and cuisines!!!
